Canine Influenza
Canine Influenza is a disease that can periodically flare up and be cause for concern. If you recently adopted a pet, or if you have been to or are planning on going to a dog park, boarding facility, or grooming facility you should exercise caution with your dog's exposure.
If your dog is vaccinated for Canine influenza, that should offer protection. However, keep in mind that just like human flu, there can be different strains and variables which can impact the effectiveness of the vaccination. If your dog is not vaccinated and you are concerned, you may want to consider vaccinating. To start the vaccination, your dog would need an initial vaccination, followed by a booster 2-4 weeks later. Your dog would reach maximum immunity 4-6 weeks following the booster, and immunity would last for 12 months. There is currently a high demand for Canine Influenza vaccines and supply is limited. If you will be boarding, it is a good idea to check if the kennel will require vaccination for Canine Influenza.
Symptoms of Canine Influenza in dogs include sneezing, cough, discharge in the eyes or nose, and lethargy. Canine influenza is considered a low risk to people. If you notice symptoms, please keep your dog separate from other pets outside of your household.
